Asphalt Soils explores soil conceptions in contemporary urban landscape, using asphalt as the main lens of investigation. Asphalt is generally considered to be the material that symbolises the most harmful conditions in cities. However, it is argued that a different gaze is possible: within this perspective asphalt can exceed some traditional, but questionable, categories employed to understand the world such as nature | culture, biotic | abiotic, solid | fluid. An examination of seven landscape architecture projects demonstrates how this change in perspective impacts soil design and conception.
